The June 2025 FIDE rating list saw World Champion GM Gukesh Dommaraju drop 11 points and two spots after the SuperBet Chess Classic, while the winner of the event, GM Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, saw a nine-point gain to jump one spot to seventh. GM Alireza Firouzja jumped to eighth after his Superbet performance, while GM Anish Giri has climbed six places to world number 12, his best ranking since March 2024.

Gukesh's drop led to a couple of shifts among the top, but what has not changed is GM Magnus Carlsen topping the list for the 168th time, while GM Hikaru Nakamura also remains second without any games played. Both Norway Chess and the Stepan Avagyan Memorial are still ongoing and will only count for the July list, so there will be notable changes among the top 10 in June.

Some notable players outside of the top ten also saw gains. GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave is back in the top 20 after he tied for first place in the SuperBet Chess Classic, together with Praggnanandhaa and Firouzja. GM Vincent Keymer also earned ten points through his victory with 7/9 in the German Championship, despite a final round loss against GM Alexander Donchenko.

The biggest rating gainer among the Top 100 is GM Alexander Indjic, who gained 24 points thanks to his victory in the Baku Open and finishing second in the Sharjah Masters. The Serbian 29-year-old jumped 30 places to 62nd, setting a new personal record rating with 2661.

The June list also saw a few notable drops. GM Jan-Krzysztof Duda is out of the top 20 after his performance in Romania, losing 14 rating points. Another is GM Alexander Grischuk, who is down to 57th in the world with 2667, his lowest rating since 2001.

We also see that GM Vasyl Ivanchuk, who picked up 40 points last month after playing a staggering 27 games in 19 days, dropped 18 places after finishing last in TePe Sigeman with 2.5/7, but managed to stay in the top 100.

The women's list shows China's complete dominance, as they now take up the top five spots. That is a result of GMs Zhu Jiner and Tan Zhongyi gaining six and ten points, respectively, to climb a few spots on the list.

Twenty-year-old IM Bibisara Assubayeva from Kazakhstan also moved into the top ten after securing her GM title in Sharjah as the 43rd female player to do so. She gained 15 points to set a new personal best with 2509.

The biggest climber this month, according to FIDE, was WGM Maili-Jade Ouellet from Canada, who gained 45 points, earned her final IM norm, and re-entered the women's top 100 after dropping out in January.

As usual, there were more significant changes on the Junior list, which is topped by Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa. 18-year-old GM Bardiya Daneshvar continued his rise from May, and the Iranian is now seventh after a 19-point jump through his victory in the Asian Individual Championship and a 5.5/9 result in Sharjah.

GM Christopher Yoo earned 19 points and climbed three places through his victory in the Sardinia Chess Festival, but is now suspended by FIDE pending an investigation into allegations of harassment.

The biggest climber among the top juniors is 14-year-old GM Ivan Zemlyanskii, the world's second-youngest GM behind Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, who reached a new peak with 2585 after gaining 22 points.

We'll take a look at these prodigies in our next segment.

Prodigy Watch: Shogdzhiev, Oro, And Erdogmus Climb

The Prodigy Watch is an idea by Chess By The Numbers founder Tai Pruce-Zimmerman. It tracks the progress of young chess superstars, with an emphasis on those setting records.

His "Prodigy rank" is a measure of how a player's current rating at their current age compares historically. If there are 11 players in chess history who have been rated higher, at or before the player's precise current age, then the player would have a prodigy rank of #12.

In the June update, there are several noteworthy changes at the top. It features perhaps the three most exciting young prospects in the chess world today.

Ten-year-old FM Roman Shogdzhiev, who last month became the youngest-ever international master, achieved a 2402 rating to also become the youngest-ever 2400 player. It's a remarkable achievement, as he is breaking the impressive record set by GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov in April 2015.

Eleven-year-old IM Faustino Oro has been close to scoring his first grandmaster norm in three consecutive tournaments. He also reached a new peak rating of 2465 thanks to his performance in Sharjah. The Argentinian "Messi of Chess" still has months to achieve the title, reach 2500, and break Gukesh's record as the youngest-ever to score a GM norm.

As noted in the Junior update, Erdogmus also climbed and set a new personal best with 2626, making him the third highest-rated 14-year-old ever. It's also worth noting that he is just eight points behind GM Wei Yi's record for the highest rating ever achieved before turning 15.

The world's youngest grandmaster is now actively working with GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, who recently expressed his excitement: "I was 20 years old when I first beat a 2700. Yagiz achieved this at the age of 14 [13]. Yagiz is the most talented young player in the world and for me he is the biggest candidate to become a world champion."

The youngest-ever to achieve a 2200 rating, CM Luca Protopescu from France, dropped some points and is down to a number-two rank, but 2160 at age 9.18 is an impressive feat, just behind Oro's peak rating of 2182 at the same age.

Among girls, WFM Bodhana Sivanandan (2109, 10.24, number-57) continued her uptick of the past few months, climbing back above 2100. Fifteen-year-old IM Lu Miaoyi, among the youngest-ever female IMs, reached a new personal best this month with 2452. Although our girls' version of Prodigy Watch still requires further review, it appears that both of them are among the top five rated girls of all time at their respective ages.

A couple of other notable mentions are this month's two additions to the under-10 2000+ club, Han Nam Pham from France and Xu Zhihan from Canada. Their Prodigy Ranks could actually be pushing the top ten if they were born in late December.
